What is Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) and why do UK schools need to complete it?
We outline what SECR is, why it is necessary for many schools and MATs. We also suggest that it is a vital tool for all schools this academic year.

What is Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR)?
SECR is a way of recording the amount of energy used by a UK company and also recording the mass of carbon dioxide released. There is also an expectation that the report has planned strategies to reduce energy and carbon. Clean Green Innovation Ltd specialises in writing SECR for UK education establishments and companies.
Why should we do it?
SECR is mandatory for all large companies. A large company has 250+ employees. Many schools and multi academy trusts qualify as large companies and need to provide a Streamlined Energy and Carbon Report each year. For schools this needs to be part of the Trustees' Report in each autumn financial statement. There are heavy fines if an accurate audited SECR is not produced.
What if we are not a large employer?
SECR is still a useful and valuable measurement to make. Every school must assign a Sustainability Lead and produce a Climate Action Plan by 2025. By completing a SECR now, you will have a base value to compare with future years and show progress towards a net zero future that we all need - and your children are keen to ensure happens.
